• Duration varies a lot. Sources put typical internships anywhere between one and six months.
• The law treats "interns" and "trainees" differently. Most students never hear about this, and it affects pay. We explain it below.
• Selection is about proof, not grades. Finished projects, a clean CV and a short, well-targeted application beat mass applying.

How an Internship in Nepal Works: Intern vs Trainee

Most guides skip this part, but it matters for your pay and rights.

Nepal's Labour Act, 2074 (2017) recognises two arrangements that people casually call "internship":

1. A curriculum-based internship (Section 16). According to Moksha Legal Group's summary, an enterprise can take someone on as a trainee (an "intern" in common usage) under an agreement with an educational institute and following that institute's approved curriculum. The person is not treated as a regular labourer, but if the placement goes against the approved curriculum, they can be treated as regular labour.
2. An on-the-job trainee (Section 18). The same summary says a person can be engaged as a trainee for on-the-job training for up to one year. Law Imperial's overview adds that trainees are entitled to social security benefits, including provident fund and gratuity, and to minimum remuneration.

Why this matters in practice:

• The current national minimum monthly remuneration is NPR 19,550 (basic NPR 12,170 plus dearness allowance), effective 17 July 2025 for all sectors except tea estates, as reported by Law Gandhi. It is reviewed every two years, so check the latest Ministry of Labour notice.
• Most quoted internship stipends (see the table below) are lower than that figure. That does not automatically mean a placement is illegal, because a college-agreement internship is treated differently from a trainee role. It does mean you should ask which arrangement applies before you accept.

There is no official, audited "average intern stipend" for Nepal. What exists are ranges quoted by job portals and colleges, so treat them as guides rather than guarantees.

What we can say with confidence:

• Most quoted ranges top out around NPR 20,000. IT is generally described as the best-paying internship area.
• Unpaid internships exist. Some startups and small companies offer mentorship instead of a stipend, and the trade-off is real, so judge the learning value, not just the money. KMC's advice is to ask whether you will do real tasks and whether someone reviews your work.
• Your skill level moves the number. Kumari Job notes that pay also depends on company size, location and the demand for a role, and that students with more skill are more likely to get paid placements.

Nepal has a real IT employer base. Padmashree College's 2026 guide names F1Soft and eSewa, Cotiviti Nepal, Deerwalk, Leapfrog Technology, CloudFactory, LogPoint and Fusemachines among established names, alongside many startups and software houses. Tip: Many internships are never advertised. KMC points out that referrals from seniors and networks matter more than most students expect. Ask seniors, alumni and mentors where they interned and who to email.

Use several channels at once. Applying in one place only is the most common reason students hear nothing back.

When to apply. KMC lists the common windows as after semester exams, during summer break, and when companies start new project cycles early in the year. Start preparing a couple of months before you apply.

How to Get an IT Internship in Nepal: Step by Step

• Step 1: Pick one track. Choose web, QA, data, cybersecurity, design or marketing. Do not apply to "anything IT". Recruiters can tell.
• Step 2: Learn the basics of one stack. For a web internship that means HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Git. For QA it means test cases and bug reports. KMC suggests picking something you can commit to for at least three months.

• Step 9: Follow up. IIMS College suggests a polite follow-up three to five days after applying. NecoJobs also lists skipping follow-ups as a common mistake.

Common mistakes: applying without basic skills, sending the same CV to every company, and not following the application instructions exactly.

Internship After +2 or SEE, and Remote Internships

• After +2 or SEE. NecoJobs says beginners can get IT internships when they have basic skills, a few simple projects and a strong interest in learning. KMC adds that first- and second-year students can apply, though it is less common unless you have strong projects. If you have just finished SEE or +2, spend a few months on one skill first and build a small portfolio.
• Remote internships. They exist, especially for web and software roles, but KMC notes that many companies still prefer hybrid or on-site interns for training. Treat a remote internship the same way: check who mentors you and how your work is reviewed.
• How long does it last? Sources differ: KMC says most last one to three months, NecoJobs says two to six months, and IIMS says three to six months. Confirm the internship duration in writing.

Red Flags to Check Before You Accept

Ask these questions before you say yes:

• Will I work on real tasks? Repetitive non-technical work with no learning is a warning sign, as KMC points out.
• Who is my mentor, and how often is my work reviewed?
• Is the internship paid, and how is it classified? Ask if it is a college-agreement internship or a trainee role (see the legal section).
• What is the duration and daily schedule?
• Will I get a certificate and a reference? Get the terms in writing. Ask for a supervisor's recommendation at the end.
• Is there a chance of a job after? Some companies convert interns, but nobody can promise it.
